Transportation issues urgent in Barrhaven

With new communities being built in South Nepean at the fastest rate in the City of Ottawa and the impending move of 4000 employees to the RCMP's new headquarters on Merivale Road, transportation issues are key to the success of business in the Barrhaven area.

Ottawa City Council's November, 2007 decision on the future of transit in Ottawa is a critical issue for Barrhaven. Here is the staff report on the $2B transit system, as well as updates and background news stories.

BBIA Transportation Study
(Spring, 2007) -- The BBIA has just released the Transportation Study prepared for the BBIA Transportation Focus Group. We have presented the report to the Mayor's Office for consideration by his Task Force on Transportation. As the report points out, with the cancellation of the LRT, the need to resolve transportation issues in Barrhaven is urgent. Among the report's recommendations: proceed immediately with rapid transit and build the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge.

Strandherd widening contract awarded
(Monday, June 19, 2007) -- The contract for the Strandherd widening has been awarded to Lafarge.

The company is submitting a construction plan but I do know that the plan is to start first with the southern lane, leaving the northern lanes closest to the mall open.

Construction will start in July.

I will keep you updated as I learn more about the plan and have had an opportunity to meet with the City, should we wish to see amendments for the benefit of businesses in this corridor.

Thanks and please contact me with any questions.

Prince of Wales widening
The City is also in the process of approving the widening of Prince of Wales Drive from Fisher to Woodroffe. Read the City's report on the Prince of Wales Drive Widening.

Greenbank Road Widening
Widening Greenbank to four lanes from Malvern to Cambrian is included in the budget forecast for 2011-2016 as a $5 million project. However, widening Greenbank from Hunt Club to Malvern or from Cambrian to Prince of Wales isn't even on the radar yet.
