EXTERIOR CONSTRUCTION AT NEW RCMP HEADQUARTERS

News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION

The RCMP wishes to advise residents that exterior construction work at its new national headquarters campus in Barrhaven is scheduled to begin in late July 2009.

The work is necessary to make the facilities suitable for use by the RCMP.  The new RCMP national headquarters campus, as is the current RCMP headquarters, will be a secure area with restricted and controlled visitor access.

Construction projects include the re-alignment of road access to the main entry at Leikin Drive, the construction of pedestrian and vehicle control points, and the completion of the fence surrounding the perimeter of the property.  The pathway which is located along the east and south-east perimeter of the site has been re-aligned outside of the fence to ensure that residents continue to have access to it.  In addition, the installation of traffic signals at the main entrance on Leikin Drive has been proposed to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

These projects are targeted for completion by spring 2010, with all other necessary renovations to the interior of the buildings expected to be wrapped up by spring 2011.

The RCMP's national headquarters operations are currently housed in several sites in the National Capital Region.  The relocation to the new campus will allow headquarters programs to be more responsive, to coordinate their work more effectively and to use resources more efficiently.  This, in turn, will enhance RCMP operations and services to the public.

The RCMP is committed to ensuring that the transition is a positive experience for everyone and is looking forward to joining the Barrhaven community.
